Hi Guys,

My 7 year old son is getting into RC racing, so I thought I’d get my old PB out of the shed and give it a freshen up. I’m not too worried about keeping it original (a few parts are aftermarket already), I intend to race it a fair bit. It has a few maxima parts on it and I have a 2 speed for it I used to use sometimes. If anyone knows of any parts floating around apart from what’s on EBay I’d be keen to talk.

New parts so far:

Tyres...

Parts needed:

Drive belt
New controller, receiver and servo - ordered.

Mods planned:

Bearings fitted to belt tensioner pulley (ala Maxima)
Custom make some shock towers that don’t bend
Different shocks if these aren’t ok

I used to race this at the Papakura/Takanini track (I helped make it) and Pukekohe.

Anyone else used to race at the Papakura track in the late 80’s?

Cheers,
Brent

That was always the tricky thing with the PB. The original shocks are terrible, but they mount centrally on the little plastic towers, whereas every other type of shock mounts on one side or the other, causing them to twist. Quite hard to make better towers too and there isn't much to connect them to. Yours looks to have Kyosho gold shocks which are probably the best vintage shocks around, but it looks as if the front ones are really rears, which will restrict the front travel a lot.

I wouldn't race it. they aren't up to the power we have today, nor the types of track. While the single-belt drive-train is a nice idea, PB's execution isn't ideal as there isn't enough belt contact with the pulley, so they always slip under brakes, and often under power too, causing both the belt and pulley to wear out fast.

Can't see a lot of Maxima parts on yours, other than the body, which probably just as well as the Maxima 'upgrade' was terrible, and the fine-tooth belt just worsened the problem mentioned above. The two-speed is a cool thing when you have limited power and restrictive battery capacity, but in today's environment, it is unnecessary. In additon, PB's 2-speed has no brakes if you're in first gear, the range of gearing available is limited and you're stuck with 32-pitch.

Dennis Ware might be interested in some of those original wheels you have for his PB.

Thanks for the reply.
Maxima upgrades I made were just body, wing mount, chassis plate/undertray, belt/pullies.
I was just going to run a very mild motor in it.
Regarding the kyosho gold shocks, I have rears and fronts for the front and the short fronts have almost no droop travel whereas running the rears on the front still allows the car to bottom out on the ground and have a tiny bit of bump travel left.

I think I have found a generic replacement belt in the UK but can anyone confirm what pitch/shape they are? It looks like T2.5 4mm wide 216 tooth.

The standard belt was very soft and I assumed this was the main problem..

Not sure on belt pitch. I run the course 3mm belt in both of mine, but I do have a Maxima set with the original belt. Off the top of my head it looks like MXL - same pitch as the original Schumacher Cat.

Hey Brent,

Papakura was my first club back in the mid 80’s and ran right through till it shut down. The only Brent I can remember from back then was Brent “hard man “ Craig.

Nice PB looks pretty clean for it age (y)

Would love to be able to help you out but I have never owned a pb. Hope you can find what you need

Hey Adrian,

I think it was around 1985 when Gordon Hudson made a flyer for starting up a club and building a track, we saw the flyer on the counter at the RC shop that was part of a car yard on the Takanini straight...
My brother Jason, a mate Chris and I got in touch with him and it went from there.
My memory is a little fuzzy but I guess we were there for 2-3 years or more.. I remember doing a couple of the enduro races there, crazy stuff with 5 minute run times and NiCad battery packs that came out of the cars on fire, chucked them in ice before shoving them on the charger, we had to use all of our old tired packs just to try and make it through. Fun times.

The MXL looks like it, pitch is as close as I can measure, the length vs teeth is perfect and they do a 215 tooth that is exactly what mine is, but the closest width is 4.76mm, mine measures exactly 4.0mm, but all 3 pullies will take 5mm width, a bit of extra contact would be a great thing. I’ll order a couple and see how the fit.

Fitted some flanged bearings tonight to the tensioner, turned up some spacers to make it fit nicely and not walk around.

Raced it on Sunday, went really well, finished all 3 races with no problems at all. Needs some more tyre choices as the track gets very loose before end of the day. Our local track here is quite rough and has some big / nasty jumps compared with what we had at Papakura back in the 80’s

Would anyone here have any PB parts at all that they may want to sell?
I have 4 new belts for it, new bearings, pinions, spur gears, (both single and two speed), drive pulley, motor, esc and servo, I made a new chassis plate that is more rigid. Going to bolt the chassis halves together rather than screw as they tend to loosen up quite fast.
I’ve found a heap of NIP parts in Italy for it, but really would like the 2 chassis halves.... and some maxima front and rear lower arms.

I have a stack of parts, but not the parts you're after. I did have a full set of Maxima bits years ago, but I suspect that they've been butchered as part of my many home-build attempts. I think I still have the Maxima steering knuckle/arm bits somewhere and probably some Maxima shock towers, along with the Maxima fine-tooth belt, which I wouldn't recommend. I bought a NIB set of chassis rails a year or two ago from a guy in Sweden via EBay, but they don't come up often.

I got a bit carried away ordering new parts for the PB.... they should arrive in about a week or so.
Can anyone tell me of the gens ace 2S 4000mA stick pack that is made in the same shape as the old NiCad packs will fit in the battery hole in the Mini Mustang/maxima chassis? Or does anyone know if the Reedy version is a closer size to old packs.

I have a couple of the roundy shaped Lipo packs and they don't fit through the PB chassis holes. I think they are the Gen Aces ones but not 100% sure. Might be better to adapt it for saddles and run one each side on the chassis, or use a super low profile 2s pack (2600 MaH or similar - same size as one saddle pack) on one side and put all the electrics on the other - will probably be miles under weight anyway, so you could add weights to balance it properly.
